In addition to the increased safety features that are generally offered by flag football over tackle football, the rules governing both the recreational and competitive divisions of NFL Flag Football San Diego are specifically designed not only to help all players develop their skills but to do so in an environment in which player safety and the development of every individual player are the two most important goals.  These are the goals around which the league has developed the rules which govern both its competitive and recreational youth flag football leagues.  The two leagues are governed by comprehensive rulebooks that contain detailed guidelines, which ensure players have the chance to enjoy themselves and develop their football skills in the safest manner and environment possible.

Ensuring Chances for Players to Develop Their Skills by Limiting Team Size and Mandating Maximum Playing Time for Every Player

In NFL Flag San Diego, players are guaranteed a certain amount of playing time to help each individual child develop his or her individual skills.  In the competitive division, players are guaranteed to play an equal amount of time in every single game, while in the recreational division, players are guaranteed to play three out of four quarters in every game.  Teams are also intentionally kept small in order to maximize playing time for every team member.  Recreational division teams are limited to nine players, while teams in the competitive division are limited to only ten members.  This ensures that every player will be out on the field for the majority of the game, as opposed to other youth sports leagues where only the star players may have the opportunity to play and develop their skills.

Mandating Player Safety to Keep Your Child Safe

The rules governing both the competitive and recreational divisions of NFL Flag San Diego were specifically written with player safety in mind.  There are no kickoffs or punts in flag football; any football fan knows that these are the most dangerous plays in football and the plays in which more players are injured (and suffer more serious injuries) than any other type of play due to the speed at which opposing players rush the kick or punt returner.   Age cut-offs are also set and enforced to ensure that all players are competing against children the same age (and thus closer to their size) as them.  In addition, the equipment utilized is also meant to encourage player safety; for instance, although cleats are permitted, cleats with exposed metal are not allowed and must be removed.  A ball carrier is also not permitted to leave his feet unless he is doing so in order to avoid a collision, thus lessening the chances of players colliding in mid-air and injuring one another.  Blocking or contact with the opposing quarterback while on defense also are not allowed, so parents need not worry about the toll that repeated collisions during practice or a game may take on a young body.  The rules are designed to assist children in developing their skills while also keeping players safe.
