Registration for NFL Flag San Diego’s spring flag football season for both its recreational and competitive divisions closes on January 21st.  From its humble beginnings as an idea from two brothers to bring youth flag football to the greater San Diego area in 2012, NFL Flag San Diego has grown quickly in its 5+ years in existence.  Spring 2018 will mark the sixth year the league will offer San Diego youth, both male and female, the opportunity to compete in a safe, team-centered alternative to traditional tackle football.  With the success of NFL Flag San Diego, we are launching inaugural seasons in two new locations, NFL Flag Silicon Valley and Alfred Blue NFL Flag Houston. All of our programs are supported by current and former National Football League athletes and is an official program of NFL Play 60, a movement by the National Football League to promote activity and good health by the nation’s youth.

Our leagues are designed to provide young athletes with opportunities to learn and grow, as both teammates and athletes, regardless of their football skill level or experience.  NFL Flag San Diego offers both recreational and competitive divisions, so your child can compete no matter whether he or she has ever played football before.  Since its inception in 2012, NFL Flag San Diego is the largest year round flag football league in California and has continued to grow the number of cities in which it operates in only five years.  We offer a county-wide program throughout San Diego and appeal to every level of athlete with our competitive and recreational divisions.  Today, we serve more than 5,000 youth each year and have over 400 teams in San Diego, Chula Vista, Ramona, Poway, Inland Valley and North County.  Each location plays games in their surrounding area only until Super Bowl weekend. Participation is expected to continue to grow with the launch of our winter leagues currently running.

NFL Flag San Diego Offers Both Competitive and Recreational Divisions

Unsure about whether your son or daughter is ready for flag football?  Unlike some youth tackle football leagues as well as other youth team sports, NFL Flag San Diego is open to both male and female participants.   We encourage both our male and female participants and their parents to choose the league that is right for them, which is why we began offering both competitive and recreational divisions in fall 2016.  Both leagues offer participants the opportunity to develop their leadership skills, make new friends, excel at a sport without the heightened injury risks present in normal tackle football and to learn to work with teammates on a small team.  Our coaches in both our competitive and recreational divisions are required to play each player a majority of the game.  No matter which league you choose for your child, he or she will not sit on the bench during game time.  Instead, every participant on our small teams of only five-eight other boys and girls are instrumental participants in every team’s success.  In addition, NFL Flag San Diego has very comprehensive safety rules that are designed to help your child develop confidence and hone their physical skills while staying safe on the football field.

A Rapidly Growing League That is Poised to Continue Expanding

Due to the pent-up demand in the greater San Diego area for a safer, less-physically harmful alternative to traditional youth tackle football, participation in NFL Flag San Diego has grown rapidly since the league was first started in 2012.  From less than 400 players in the fall league and 300 in the spring league in our inaugural seasons in 2012, we have grown to almost 1500 players in the fall league and 2200 in the spring league in 2017, an increase of over 300 percent.  The league’s explosive growth allowed us to begin play in our competitive division in fall 2016.  The outpouring of demand also has enabled us to rapidly increase the area we serve, with the number of cities in southern California we serve having doubled in only five short years.  In addition, the demand has been so great that in 2018 NFL Flag San Diego began offering both winter leagues for the very first time.  Registration for the spring season is currently ongoing and closes on January 21st.  Registration information can be found here.
