Winter League 2019 Kicks Off in Two Short Weeks

NFL San Diego is on the verge of launching another season of its popular winter youth flag football league.  Several years ago, we received requests from some of our young athletes and their parents for a league in between the conclusion of our fall league in November and the beginning of our spring season in early March, a time of the year when very few sports are in season and there is a natural lull in the youth sports calendar.  In response, we began offering a winter season.  The result has been a league that has grown each year we have offered it and that features a more limited slate of games than our fall or spring campaigns.  Nevertheless, our players can keep their skills sharp in preparation for the spring season, our largest and most competitive league.

Details Regarding the 2019 NFL Flag San Diego Winter League

The winter 2019 league will feature play in the pre-k and kindergarten, first and second grade, third and fourth grade, fifth and sixth grade, and seventh and eighth grade age groups.  The competition will be robust, as the four oldest age groups will all have at least ten teams competing against one another.  Rosters for each of the teams in the 2019 winter league were just released and schedules will be released on January 5th, the same day that a coaches’ clinic will take place for all the winter league coaches.  The winter league games will begin play the weekend of January 11th and 12th, with four weeks of games taking place before the winter league playoffs begin the weekend of February 8th and 9th, culminating in a championship game in each age group division to cap off the winter league on February 8th.  The top two teams from each tournament division will advance to the winter league playoffs and championships.  Finally, in order to maximize the geographical scope that has helped our league to achieve its explosive growth since we first started NFL Flag San Diego in 2013, we will feature games throughout the greater San Diego area at four different sites in North County (San Marcos Middle School), Poway (Meadowbrook Middle School), San Diego (Kearny High School), and Inland Valley (location to be announced).

The Benefits of Competing in NFL Flag San Diego’s Winter League

At NFL Flag San Diego, our winter league serves as a bridge between our two most popular and largest leagues, the fall and the spring campaigns.  While smaller in size in terms of both the total participation and the number of games played than either our fall or spring leagues, participation in the winter league is an excellent opportunity for participants to keep their skills sharp in the roughly four months between the conclusion of our fall league and the beginning of our spring league.  Spring is always our largest league, so teams that come into the spring season having competed together as a team in the winter league will have a leg up on the competition going into our largest and arguably toughest season.  This can make a huge difference, as it may take teams that have been off for four months and who did not compete in the winter league several weeks of games and practice to shake off the rust from an extended layoff, whereas the teams and individual players that competed in the winter league will begin play in the spring league without missing a beat since they just finishing competing.  Thus, even though the winter season is shorter than either the spring or fall leagues, our winter league is nevertheless a great opportunity for both individual athletes and teams to maintain their sharpness going into the spring season.  It also provides an opportunity for teams to work on maintaining their cohesion as a unit going into the spring league.
