NFL Flag San Diego recently held the playoffs for its 2019 winter season after a fantastically successful winter season. The winter season comes during that part of the year where the holidays often interfere with sports schedules and we therefore do not have as large a turnout for our winter league as the number of participants in our spring and fall leagues. However, the number of participants in our winter league continues to increase with every passing year, which is a testament to the continually growing popularity of youth flag football in the greater San Diego area. Our spring 2019 season is coming up, which is always one of the highlights of our youth flag football calendar, with play beginning in early March. Although spring registration is now closed, we are excited to begin play in a few short weeks on March 8th in what promises to be another successful spring campaign. However, before turning our thoughts to spring, we need to take a moment to acknowledge the teamwork, hard work and gritty play by each of our winter 2019 participants that helped the teams in each of our age groups emerge victorious in the playoffs.

The NFL Flag San Diego Winter League 2019 Playoffs

The winter league began play on January 11th and 12th and featured four weeks of fearsome regular season competition. At the conclusion of the regular season, each team in our age groups advanced to the playoffs held on February 9th. Just as is the case in both of our fall and spring leagues, the winter 2019 winter playoffs featured two rounds of playoffs: the wild card division for teams that may have stumbled a bit during the regular season and the championship bracket featuring the teams that emerged with the best record in each age group. NFL Flag San Diego implemented this playoff format several years ago in order to allow all teams, even those that may not have had as much success in the regular season, the opportunity to compete in the playoffs. Just as has been the case in previous years, the feedback from players and parents was excellent. The winning teams in each respective age group were the following:

  • 1st-2nd age group: the 49ers coached by Coach Lopez
  • 3rd-4th grade age group: the Packers coached by Coach Blom
  • 5th-6th grade age group: the Chargers coached by Coach Hansen
  • 7th-8th grade age group: the Colts coached by Coach Richmond

Congratulations are due to each of these teams and their coaches but also to all of the participants in our winter 2019 league, who competed hard week in and week out before putting it all on the line in the playoffs.

The Spring 2019 NFL Flag San Diego Season

Games for our spring 2019 leagues will begin the weekend of March 8th and 9th and will continue for eight weeks until the playoffs begin in mid-May. Participants can sign up for either a Gold/Competitive division or a Recreational division team, depending on the particular participant’s level of experience, personal goals and level of comfort in participating in organized youth flag football. Week Six of the spring leagues will feature Player Day with members of one of Southern California’s two NFL franchises. After regular season play has concluded, we will feature two weekends of playoff games culminating in a Super Bowl weekend on Saturday, May 11th.
